Secondary coach John Richardson, safeties coach Taylor Mays, and the Washington Huskies are hoping to see their hot streak of recruiting defensive backs continue in the 2028 class.
That includes extending an offer to four-star safety Derrick Coleman Jr., a 5-foot-11, 175-pound product of Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California, after a productive sophomore season in which he recorded 71 tackles, 5 for loss, with a forced fumble.
Coleman now holds 12 offers, as the Huskies compete with California, Georgia Tech, Miami, Oklahoma, USC, and more for his services.

On film, Coleman is the type of prospect that Mays covets, which makes him a good fit for the post safety position in defensive coordinator Ryan Walters' scheme. He plays with great physicality, triggering downhill quickly to attack rushing lanes and blow up screens, routinely laying big hits on opposing receivers and running backs.
Coleman also shows off good instincts and fluid athleticism in coverage. He has the ability to flip his hips without decelerating, keeping his eyes in the backfield the whole time and reading the quarterback's eyes, which puts him in an opportunistic position to make a play on the ball.
The Huskies currently hold two commits in the secondary for the 2027 class: four-star safety Isala Aisa Wily-Ava and three-star cornerback Maurice Williams, and as Jedd Fisch's coaching staff searches for more reinforcements, it hasn't stopped building relationships with some of the nation's top underclassmen.
