In an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Washington Huskies coach Jedd Fisch discussed lengthy coaching journey and the current state of college football.
Fisch kicked off his appearance by taking a shot at Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and head coach Jim Harbaugh.
"I have a lot of envy of Mike's wardrobe based on the amount of heat I got for certain things that I was wearing back in those days," Fisch told Eisen, almost a decade after acting as the passing game coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and wide receivers coach under Harbaugh during the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Michigan Wolverines.
Fisch was also quick to nod to the long list of successful head coaches that he has worked with throughout his career, and the Huskies head man shared that he has a wall of quotes from seven of those coaches inside his office: Bill Belichick, Steve Spurrier, Mike Shanahan, Jim Harbaugh, Sean McVay, Pete Carroll, and Brian Billick.
Outside of Harbaugh, the other current NFL head coach that Fisch spent an extensive amount of time praising was McVay. Fisch worked under McVay as a senior offensive assistant and clock-management specialist during the Los Angeles Rams' 2018 season, which ended in a loss in Super Bowl LIII, before he was promoted to assistant offensive coordinator in 2019, before he was hired as the New England Patriots' quarterbacks coach in 2020.
"I've always talked about it from him: you compete with schematics, but you win with people. And I think that Sean is so good at connecting with people that it's kind of been our secret sauce here over the last five or six years at what type of relationships can we build in and out of the building to be able to have the type of success that Sean has," Fisch said when asked about what makes McVay so special as a coach.
With experience with some of the most successful coaches in the history of the game, Fisch has been able to put together a successful head coaching resume of his own. As he enters his third year at Washington, he's looking to turn the Huskies into a true contender in the College Football Playoff picture.
