The Washington Huskies football team has fielded a team that represents a balance of youth and veteran presence.

This has played out well for the Huskies so far this season, as they'll be 3-0 entering their Big Ten opener against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. PT on Saturday at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Many of the contributing players on the younger side of the spectrum are second-year players receiving their first sustained opportunity to start, such as cornerback Dylan Robinson and wide receiver Chris Lawson.

In addition to the second-year players, Washington has also seen many true freshmen receive meaningful reps.

According to a post on "X" shared by the Huskies' official account, true freshmen have accounted for 729 snaps, 13 starts and have totaled four touchdowns. The pair of freshman running backs, Brian Bonner and Ansu Sanoe, have combined for 119 yards and two scores with fellow freshman left tackle Kodi Greene helping to lead the way. The first-year wide receiver combination of Mason James, Trez Davis and Jordan Clay have totaled 15 catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Freshmen players on defense have accounted for 17 total tackles, two takeaways, three tackles for loss and two quarterback pressures. Notable first-years on the defense include cornerback Jeron Jones, defensive tackle Derek Colman-Brusa and edge rusher Ramzak Fruean.

Several of the aforementioned players are in their current positions receiving meaningful snaps as a matter of circumstance. Bonner and Sanoe were launched into starter/backup roles due to injuries suffered by starter and second-year running back Quaid Carr and fourth-year No. 2 tailback Jayden Limar. James, Clay and Davis received more snaps as a result to a long-term injury suffered by sixth-year receiver Christian Moss, which will keep him out two-to-three months.

Greene, Fruean, Jones and Colman-Brusa were set to receive starting or top-of-the-rotation snaps regardless. Fruean, Greene and Colman-Brusa earned outright starting jobs. Jones split reps at nickelback with third year Rahshawn Clark for the first two weeks of the season. The first-year defensive back moved outside this past week against the Eastern Washington Eagles due to an injury suffered by fourth-year cornerback Emmanuel Karnley.

The combination of first-year players will likely remain contributors for UW as it gets into the thralls of the Big Ten slate, which will get significantly more difficult sooner rather than later.

After Saturday's game against the Golden Gophers, Washington will travel to play the No. 12 Southern California Trojans at 4:30 p.m. PT on Oct. 3 at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. UW will return home the next game to play the No. 17 Iowa Hawkeyes at 6 p.m. PT on Oct. 9 at Husky Stadium.
