Texas A&M HC Mike Elko joined NCAAF commentator Josh Pate on his show for a 30-minute-long interview where he shed light on the upcoming 2026 season in Aggieland.
Pate used this interview as a chance to hear Elko’s progress report on the program, asking a wide range of questions from the overall state of the program compared to the Jimbo Fischer era to the thought process behind offseason moves.
The Aggies faced a real challenge this offseason after losing both their offensive and defensive coordinators. When given the opportunity to either promote from within or bring in fresh talent, Elko opted to stick to the existing Aggie staff, promoting Holoman Wiggins to OC and Lyle Hemphill to DC.
Wiggins has an elite pedigree, and Elko was quick to point this out: he was already co-OC, he won a national championship, and, as a longtime receiver coach, his students have won the Biletnikoff Award, the Heisman Trophy, and the Paul Hornung Award. With the benefit of familiarity with Elko and the Aggie football program, Wiggins is a deserving candidate who Elko was proud to add to the staff. He has also earned a reputation as an excellent recruiter, bringing in top-tier transfers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, as well as a host of promising high school recruits.
Hemphill was a different story, first coaching alongside Elko 20 years ago on Hofstra’s defensive staff. When Elko was hired as head coach at Duke, he brought Hemphill on as safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator. Hemphill left Elko for one season at James Madison before reuniting at Texas A&M with the title “associate head coach for defense,” which sounds awfully similar to his current title of defensive coordinator.
