JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville State football hit on a miracle Hail Mary to end the first half against Kennesaw State.

The Gamecocks sent backup quarterback Gavin Wimsatt into the game for the Hail-Mary attempt. Wimsatt heaved it downfield as two Kennesaw State defenders collided and popped the ball into the air. The ball found Deondre Johnson’s hands, and he was able to walk into the endzone for the 62-yard score.

The craziness didn’t end there as third-string quarterback Cade Cunningham was the holder on the extra point. It turned out to be a fake as he ran into to give the Gamecocks a 22-10 lead over the Owls.

The Gamecocks got the final-minute drive thanks to Caleb Nix’s third interception on the season. Jax State needed Caden Creel to scramble for 15 yards just to set up the Hail-Mary attempt from the 38-yard line.

It is just the fourth touchdown for Johnson, who has found his own in the last few games. He had 10 catches for 281 yards coming into the game. Five of those catches, for 208 yards, and all three scores have come in the last two games.
