The BYU Cougars knocked off the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 28-24 on Saturday night in Provo, in a game that ended with plenty of controversy over the final second on the clock. And Utah Gov. Spencer Cox couldn’t resist taking a shot at the Irish afterward.
Cox, a BYU fan, posted a message to Notre Dame fans on Sunday that started out as a sincere thank you. But by the end, he was poking fun at the controversial ending and Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr.
Controversial Finish
BYU took the lead on a six-yard touchdown pass from Bear Bachmeier to Walker Lyons with under two minutes to play. Carr then drove Notre Dame to the BYU 8-yard line, but his final pass to Jaden Greathouse fell incomplete in the end zone, and BYU fans stormed the field.
Replays appeared to show that the ball hit the ground with one second left. And on Sunday, the Big 12 admitted that Notre Dame should have gotten one more play.
“Following the Big 12’s review of the final play of Saturday’s Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew,” the conference said in a statement, via On3. “The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week’s games.”
We’ll never know what would have happened if Notre Dame did get one last chance to win the game, and the result of the game is not changing.
‘Sorry About Not Getting One Last Play’
After the game, Cox shared a message on social media, opening his post by thanking Notre Dame fans and praising the historically great program.
“To my Notre Dame friends and fans—thank you for putting up with all the insufferable BYU fans today (me included). Please take it as the greatest sign of respect how much this win meant to all of us. You are the big brother and the gold standard,” Cox wrote on X.
“Visiting South Bend last year was a dream come true—a true football cathedral. Football fans everywhere aspire to earn the arrogance that you have earned (and I mean that with admiration and respect). You have an incredible coach and team, so please win out. We will be cheering for you the rest of the way,” he continued.
Of course, he couldn’t help but throw in a little jab at the end of the post.
“Oh, and sorry about not getting one last play. I would have enjoyed watching Carr sail another pass over his receiver…(am I doing it right?),” Cox added.
‘Absolute Embarrassment’
While Cox’s post was largely good-natured, not everyone in Utah appreciated the joke, as former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz called the governor’s post “an absolute embarrassment” for offending both Notre Dame and BYU fans.
“This post by the Utah Governor is an absolute embarrassment. Way to offend everybody. To call BYU fans insufferable, and Notre Dame arrogant, is something special. And not in a good way. Embarrassing…..,” wrote former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz.
Clearly, the joke didn’t land with Chaffetz.
