Wazzu football re-signs WR Freeman for 2026 season

Jan. 3—The Kirby Moore era is off to an encouraging start.

The Washington State football team and Moore, the Cougars' first-year coach, announced the return of starting wide receiver Tony Freeman on Friday night, one day after announcing the return of running back Kirby Vorhees.

The two highlight a strong group of 13 Cougs who WSU has announced revenue sharing agreements with.

There are 26 total Cougs, according to 24/7sports.com and On3sports.com, who are in the transfer portal, including starting defensive tackle Bryson Lamb. The portal opened on Friday.

Freeman made 54 catches for 590 yards with three touchdowns in his second year in Pullman.

As a punt returner, he turned heads with a blazing 54 return attempts for 415 total yards.

Vorhees was Wazzu's leading rusher in 2025 with 576 yards on 138 attempts (4.2 yards per carry). Both Freeman and Vorhees had previously intended to enter the transfer portal, according to reports.

Freeman and Vorhees join six offensive linemen, tight end Trey Leckner, linebacker Keith Brown, freshman running back Maxwell Woods, tight end Beau Baker and kicker Jack Stevens as the returning signees.

Several other players who WSU has not posted about as of Friday night have announced their intentions to stay, including defensive tackle Kaden Beatty, edge Fernando Lecuona and linebackers Gage Jones and Isaiah Hung.

Quarterback Owen Eshelman and safety Trey Ridley, two former South Dakota State recruits under former coach Jimmy Rogers, are staying at WSU, according to their representation, the Mathurin Agency.
