Lane Kiffin and LSU are facing mounting criticism after their shocking 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky on Saturday. The defeat is raising fresh questions about Kiffin’s decision-making in crucial moments, prompting reactions from former LSU players Jarvis Landry and Leonard Fournette, who slammed Kiffin and his program.

Lane Kiffin Faces Criticism for Conservative Call In Kentucky Loss

LSU had several chances to secure the win against Kentucky on Saturday but failed to capitalize. One of the most controversial decisions came when the Tigers held a 27-24 lead with roughly two minutes left in regulation.

Facing fourth-and-1 at their own 43-yard line, LSU had an opportunity to extend its possession and potentially put the game out of reach by gaining one yard. However, Kiffin chose to punt rather than trust his offense to convert the crucial fourth down.

Kentucky capitalized on the opportunity, kicking a game-tying field goal before securing the win with a successful two-point conversion.

With the heavy financial investment in assembling a roster expected to compete for the SEC title and potentially the national championship, LSU’s inability to close out a tight game looked terrible in the loss.

In the latest episode of the “4th & South” podcast on Sunday, Landry expressed frustration with Kiffin’s conservative decision at such a critical moment.

“They’re really good at defense,” Landry said. “They fly around. They get hands to the ball. Whatever it is. But when I played during my time there, during your time there, what I saw was man-to-man press coverage. We don’t care who y’all are. We are better. We don’t need no help. We not bracketing nobody. And I feel like this new age defense they are bracketing.

“They are playing more cover three-quarters, all of this cover two. Bro, it’s man on man, big on big, we better than y’all. And I feel like we’ve lost sight of that at LSU. The same way we lost sight of a fourth-and-one game on the line. We have a $40 million roster. We can’t get one yard with $40 million?”

When asked why he chose to punt in that late-game situation, Kiffin explained that Kentucky’s struggles from field goal range influenced his decision.

The Wildcats’ kicker Adam Zouagui had already missed two field goals, leading the LSU coach to believe that sending the game to overtime would be the worst possible outcome if his defense could not preserve the lead.

However, that scenario ultimately became reality when LSU suffered a one-point loss, which Fournette found disrespectful.

“To lose like that, to those ugly, first of all, ugly (expletive)) school, ugly (expletive) jersey, ugly (expletive) mascot, ugly (expletive) everything, it’s disrespectful,” Fournette said.

The loss could significantly damage LSU’s College Football Playoff aspirations, as the Tigers have just an 11.2% chance of reaching the playoff this season, according to PFN.

The Tigers will now look to respond against Mississippi State on Saturday as they attempt to keep their season on track.
