'We didn't capitalize on offense': Why Deion Sanders was frustrated after beating Weber State

The Colorado Buffaloes took care of business against Weber State with a 52-21 win on Saturday. The team matched the highest point total in the Coach Prime era, set in a 52-0 win over Oklahoma State in 2024. Also, its 578 yards of total offense set one outright. The Buff have topped 550 yards for the 54th time in program history.

Despite all the things Colorado did right, coach Deion Sanders was still upset about what went wrong and his team coasting late.

"We didn't capitalize on offense," Sanders said. "We only scored 52 points, which should have been a lot more productive and a lot more expectation of that productivity. We didn't get it done what we wanted to get done. It's no way that we're satisfied with the outcome. We're not. That's just where we are right now."

Say what you want, but Coach Prime being upset about 52 points shows where Colorado is right now. Especially with Julian Lewis having a career-best game, setting multiple CU single-game passing records in the process. He set or tied at least 10 school records, among them 212 passing yards in the first quarter, breaking Joel Klatt's 211 against Texas A&M in 2005. He also has a 265.0 pass efficiency rating, a school record with a minimum of 20 attempts.

"Statistically, what was it? 17 of 23, 366, four touchdowns and no picks. I'm happy. I'm happy," Sanders said about Lewis' day.

This was only the third game in CU football history with two 100-yard receivers and a 100-yard rusher, joining Nebraska in 2009 and Colorado State in 2018. Sanders couldn't have asked for a better game from Brennan Marion and his Go-Go scheme.

Joseph Williams and DeAndre Moore Jr. both hit the century mark in receiving yards. It was Williams' second 100-yard game at Colorado, and the fifth of his career. For Moore, this was his third career 100-yard game split between CU and Texas.

"He's not only a boost to this offense, but he's a great young man," Sanders said about Moore. "I mean, great kid. Yes, sir. No, sir. On time. Never on any list of being late, missing study hall, or anything stupid like that. But this kid loves to go to practice. Loves to play the game, and he competes every play. Love that kid."

The Buffs receivers weren't the only ones getting into the act on Saturday. Micah Welch became CU's first 100-yard rusher in the Sanders' era. His 106 yards made him the first to hit the century mark since Alex Fontenot ran for 108 against Southern California in November 2022.

"Dang. We were that bad, Sanders said about Welch's game. "I'm happy. Mike is my dawg, man. He is my guy, and he knows that. So every time he runs one, he comes back and says, 'I told you I got you. I told you I got you.' So I love that young man — in the classroom, on the field, his practice habits, everything. I love him."

Colorado prepares for a bigger challenge ahead. They'll head to Northwestern to wrap up non-conference play on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, FOX).
