Wednesday Dawg Bites Is Enjoying The One-Sidedness Of It

Time is, as they say in some places, an interesting circle.
In recent years, Auburn was able to use enough backroom muscle with the SEC office to have its schedule altered, so that it could avoid that good ol’ rigor of playing Georgia and Alabama in back-to-back games. It got its wish…but in truth, the folks at Clemson without a lake have bigger problems these days…such as deciding that given their lack of football success, are they a basketball school? Or is that a gymnastics school? Maybe equestrian?
But speaking of playing teams back-to-back, its now Georgia with a schedule alignment of note, as it now gets to play Alabama and Auburn in consecutive games.
To quote the great philosopher Michael Scott, “How the turn tables.”
If you look back in recent history, Georgia shows no interest, on paper, in letting this rivalry turn its path anytime soon. That’s hard for anyone to believe who watched Georgia in the 1990s to the 200os, when every game between these two was an all-out war for 60 minutes and then some. How one-sided has it been between these two in Athens as of late?
The Tigers’ most-recent Classic City triumph was in 2005, and their most-recent time scoring more than two touchdowns in Sanford Stadium came in 2009. Auburn is still finding itself under Alex Golesh, and nothing seen so far this season indicates it will come this weekend. The Tigers strike you as a team that is banking on getting better as the season goes on. Ironically, Georgia would likely be on a greater upset alert in this game if it was still played in November as God himself intended.
Georgia’s job up front is a bit easier Saturday with one of Auburn’s top defenders, linebacker Xavier Atkins, out for this week.
With three sacks so far this season, it does certainly take away one of Auburn’s keys to defensive pressure.
More juice for this rivalry? On the week of this game no less, Georgia has flipped three-star cornerback commitment Nash Johnson from Auburn to Georgia. As the saying goes…“ABC: Always Be ‘Crootin”
It’s been almost like clockwork this season when Georgia is in the red zone. Need a score? Enter Chauncey Bowens. Saturday showed how this running back room can dig deep with both Dwight Phillips, Jr., Bo Walker and Nick Peal stepping up to carry the run game. But do either of them strike you as a battering ram like Bowens who is near-automatic inside the five? Even with some very good offenses, this team has struggled in short yardage…yes, even with the apparent greatest coach to ever call a forward pass, Todd Monken. For now, the status of Bowens going forward is at best…uncertain. We will find out more Saturday on if he is dressed or not.
If Nate Frazier continues to be unable to go, the running backs on Saturday night against Alabama may be who this team has going forward. And if these running backs continue going without this offense appearing to miss a beat, you may be looking at Mike Bobo’s finest work.
Go Dawgs!
