Week 1 College Football Games Bracing For 'Dangerous' Temperatures

As the 2026 college football regular season gets going, some areas of the country are bracing for a major heatwave.

Much of the South and Southeast could get hit by an extreme heatwave as the month of September begins. Temperatures in some U.S. states down south could reach north of 100 degrees. Playing football in the middle of a 100-degree day is not ideal. In fact, it can be dangerous.

Players are wearing pounds of equipment and competing on a field that is often much hotter than temperatures outside. Turf fields are not great for cooling down temperatures, that’s for sure.

Some college football programs are bracing for “dangerous” heat levels.

The Alabama vs. East Carolina game could be particularly dangerous.

“Saturday’s East Carolina vs Alabama game will be one of the hottest UA home games on record (11:00a CT kickoff in Tuscaloosa). Temperatures will rise into the 97-100 degree range by the fourth quarter, with the heat index near 110. The chance of a cooling shower is very low. Auburn thankfully plays Baylor at Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta (2:30p CT kickoff), where the indoor temperature is typically maintained at a comfortable 72°F when the retractable roof is closed,” James Spann shared.

Fans express their concern

“The SEC should tell the ESPN that nobody south of Tennessee will kickoff outside before 6pm until the last week in September,” one fan wrote.

“With CFB moving its season earlier into August and temps rising we’re going to see a lot more climate issues. The “Arizona” rule might become a Sun Belt standard,” one fan added.

“Dangerous!” one fan added.

“They should make sure that games aren’t kicking off during the day when temperatures are this high. Move the games to night time. The TV networks will just have to adjust,” one fan added.
