Week 1 Prediction: LSU Tigers vs. Clemson Tigers

LSU fans, get excited — it’s finally here.
After months of speculation, roster moves and offseason storylines, the 2026 college football season is ready to kick off in Baton Rouge as the LSU Tigers welcome Clemson to Tiger Stadium for a highly anticipated Week 1 showdown.
But this game is about much more than simply opening the season.
It marks the beginning of the Lane Kiffin era at LSU, with the former Ole Miss head coach making his much-anticipated debut on the sidelines in Death Valley. ESPN’s College GameDay will also be in Baton Rouge for the occasion, adding even more national attention to an already marquee matchup.
Saturday’s matchup will be the second consecutive season these two programs have met to open the year.
Last season, LSU traveled to Clemson and came away with an impressive 17-10 victory over the then-No. 4 Tigers. LSU’s defense held Clemson to just 10 points, giving the Tigers an early signature win that appeared to set the stage for a special season.
Instead, LSU finished 7-6, ultimately leading to the departure of Brian Kelly and the arrival of Kiffin.
Now, the Tigers have an opportunity to start another season against Clemson — but this time, they’ll have the advantage of playing in front of what should be an enthusiastic home crowd.
Perhaps the biggest storyline heading into Saturday is the new-look LSU offense.
Kiffin wasted no time reshaping the roster after taking over in Baton Rouge, bringing in a number of transfers and adding talent at several key positions.
The biggest addition may be quarterback Sam Leavitt, who arrives at LSU after a productive stint at Arizona State. In 2024, Leavitt threw for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 443 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns.
Now, he’ll be asked to lead an LSU offense that struggled to put points on the board last season.
Kiffin’s offensive background and the addition of new talent have created plenty of optimism that LSU can look dramatically different on that side of the ball.
However, while much of the attention will be on LSU and Kiffin, Clemson won’t be traveling to Baton Rouge simply to play the role of opening-night opponent. Dabo Swinney’s team enters the season looking to rebound from a disappointing 7-6 campaign.
If there’s one thing LSU has going for it, it’s the environment.
Tiger Stadium will be rocking under the lights, with College GameDay adding to the atmosphere surrounding the season opener. Since 2021, LSU is 30-5 at Tiger Stadium, including an impressive 24-4 record in night games.
That environment could be particularly important for a new quarterback and a first-year head coach facing a nationally recognized opponent.
Saturday night represents the beginning of a new chapter for LSU football.
A new head coach.
A new quarterback.
A revamped roster.
And a fan base expecting much more than another seven-win season.
Clemson provides an immediate test and the perfect opportunity to make an early statement.
Last year, LSU went into Clemson and left with a 17-10 victory.
This time, the Tigers will look to do it again — only with 100,000-plus fans behind them.
MY PREDICTION: LSU 37, CLEMSON 27
LSU is currently favorited 10.5-points over Clemson with the U/O at 51.5-points.
