Miami quarterback Darian Mensah entered Week 3 as the Heisman Trophy favorite in college football, and he didn’t necessarily do anything to lose that spot in a 33-20 win over Wake Forest. But Trinidad Chambliss grabbed the top spot in these power rankings with two hands on Saturday night.

The star quarterback welcomed Lane Kiffin back to Oxford with open arms, and then he ran circles around Kiffin’s shiny new LSU defense for 60 minutes in a 32-24 win that puts Ole Miss firmly in the College Football Playoff and SEC Championship discussion. His game-winning touchdown drive in the second half, coupled with his unstoppable first half, form the biggest moment of this college football season so far.

Ole Miss still has plenty of challenges in front of it in the SEC, starting with a very difficult road test at Florida coming up on Saturday. But there’s no question about one thing: Chambliss is the best quarterback in college football at the moment, and it’s going to take a whole lot to slow him down.

5. Texas QB Arch Manning

Multiple things can be true here. Texas has arguably the most talented roster in the nation and is very likely to win double-digit games this season and earn a College Football Playoff berth. As the quarterback of that team, and one of those great talents himself, that naturally makes Manning a popular Heisman candidate. The projected No. 1 pick also has led the best comeback of the season so far in Week 2 against Ohio State.

On the other side of the coin, Manning just isn’t playing great football for the most part right now. He has been sloppy all year with the exception of the fourth quarter of the Ohio State game, as routine misses continue to hurt this Texas offense. He is far from the only one making simple mistakes in burnt orange, which makes this Longhorns squad a bit of a frustrating watch at the moment.

Last season, Manning played better and better as the season went on, and maybe the same pattern will repeat in 2026. Still, it’s frustrating to see the same inconsistencies early in his second season as he had in his first year starting. If it doesn’t get cleaned up soon, it’s going to start resulting in some losses in SEC play.

4. Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith

Not much to report from Smith in Week 3, as the best player in college football had a ho-hum five catches for 85 yards in a blowout win over Kent State. Ohio State’s dominance over inferior teams might be the biggest factor working against Smith’s Heisman case at the moment.

Still, this is an offense that will feature Smith at a relentless clip, and Ohio State has some big-time matchups in the distance in Big Ten play. Until then, keep watching the future top-five pick be a man amongst boys.

3. Mississippi State QB Kamario Taylor

Kamario Taylor got off to a rough start in his SEC opener on Saturday, but he caught fire in the second half of a 41-34 win for Mississippi State over South Carolina. Taylor continues to show off incredible arm talent, deep ball accuracy and athleticism as a scrambler that makes this Bulldogs offense very difficult to slow down.

He finished the day 18-of-26 with 251 yards, four touchdowns and an interception while also picking up 33 yards on the ground. The spotlight around Taylor is quickly growing, and he has some tough competition coming up. If he and Mississippi State falter, he will be off of these lists, but he also has plenty of chances to rise as well. First up is a home date with Missouri on Saturday night.

2. Miami (FL) QB Darian Mensah

Mensah’s numbers are still mind-blowing this season, but the lack of competition that Miami is playing has a chance to really hurt him in this race. Still, 71-of-79 with 873 yards and 11 touchdowns is impressive no matter who is on the other sideline. Mensah continues to be surgical in this Hurricanes offense and should continue to carve up the ACC when conference play resumes. First, it’s another cupcake on Saturday against Central Michigan.

1. Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss

Chambliss’ numbers this season are very good. He is completing 70% of his passes, has almost 1,000 total yards and nine touchdowns in three games, two of which came against potential CFP teams. Ole Miss is 3-0 and is now a top-five team, which is helping his Heisman case as well.

But it’s what you feel when watching Chambliss that puts him at the top of this list. He combines innate playmaking ability and a highlight-reel tendency with a precision and a calm about his game that allows this Ole Miss offense to be arguably the best in the country. He is just as good in structure as he is out of it, which makes this entire thing feel sustainable.

Chambliss and Ole Miss are just starting their gauntlet of an SEC schedule, and they might have to do it without Kewan Lacy in the near future. Next up is a trip to The Swamp for a game against an unbeaten Florida team that just snuck into the top 25 this week.
