The Heisman Trophy landscape has shifted quite a bit over the last few weeks in college football, and there is a new name at the top of the list once again heading into Week 6. Jeremiah Smith continues to put up insane numbers week after week as Ohio State rolls through the Big Ten, and he is now in pole position to win the sport’s most prestigious individual award.
Last week, two players sat ahead of Smith in the Heisman power rankings. Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss were off last week, and Kamario Taylor and Mississippi State suffered their first loss in a turnover-ridden defeat at the hands of Alabama. Both dropped this week as a result.
And about that Alabama team: Keelon Russell is the real deal. The standout sophomore completed 16-of-22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. The Tide are undefeated now and Russell is right in the middle of the Heisman race.

Who else is on the list? Let’s get into the rankings heading into a blockbuster slate in Week 6.
Honorable mention: Florida RB Jadan Baugh, Miami (FL) WR Malachi Toney, Oklahoma State QB Drew Mestemaker, Texas QB Arch Manning, Missouri QB Austin Simmons
5. Mississippi State QB Kamario Taylor
Last week: 2
Taylor had a couple of brutal turnovers on Saturday in a game that he left late in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a foot injury, and having that happen on a national stage will hurt his Heisman hopes. Still, the Mississippi State star showed that he has the talent to carve up just about any defense, and he still has plenty of chances to impress voters throughout the rest of the season. The Bulldogs have a week off to lick their wounds before a road trip to Death Valley to take on LSU.
4. Miami (FL) QB Darian Mensah
Last week: 4
Mensah and Miami rolled once again on Saturday night on the road against Clemson. The Hurricanes won 41-13 and Mensah finished 18-of-27 with 227 yards and two total touchdowns. It was business as usual for the Canes, and now they have a week off before another rivalry game against Florida State before the schedule starts to heat up with a top 25 date with Pitt on Oct. 24.
3. Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss
Last week: 1
Chambliss had the week off and was punished for it as Ole Miss has fallen to the outskirts of the national discussion. The college football world has been sitting with the Rebels’ loss to Florida for two weeks now, and Chambliss’ Heisman case has drifted into there background a bit as a result. Ole Miss has a road game against Vanderbilt on Saturday where Chambliss can re-establish himself at the forefront of voters’ minds with a big game.
2. Alabama QB Keelon Russell
Last week: NR
Russell continues to be a pleasant surprise and is bringing back the version of the Kalen DeBoer-Ryan Grubb offense that we saw in Seattle with Michael Penix Jr. calling the shots. This Alabama passing game is explosive with speed and talent all over the field, and Russell’s legs add an element to the Crimson Tide that makes them nearly impossible to stop.
Saturday could be a big statement day for Russell when Alabama hosts No. 2 Georgia. If he has a big game against Kirby Smart and company, he will be one of the biggest stars in college football by Monday morning.
1. Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith
Last week: 3
Smith is just about as unguardable as any player has ever been at the wide receiver position in college football. He posted another ridiculous statline on Saturday against an Iowa defense that entered the day as the No. 1 scoring defense in college football: 11 catches, 206 yards and two touchdowns. For the season, he has 44 catches for 823 yards and nine touchdowns, putting him on a truly record-setting pace. If he can keep that up over the next few weeks, where Ohio State plays Indiana, USC and Oregon all in a row after a date with Maryland on Saturday.
