The Washington Commanders will look to pick up the first win of the regular season when they host the Seattle Seahawks for the 2026 opener on Sunday, but can fans already get a look at some of the talent who could address early roster concerns? Taking a look at five college football games for fans to watch on Saturday who could materialize into names to know next April.
DT Will Echoles: #4 Ole Miss at #21 Florida (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)
Ole Miss will get a chance to follow up an emotion win vs. LSU with a road trip vs. Florida, yet Echoles will look to control the trenches once again. A former All-American, Scholes was named Defensive MVP of the 2025 Sugar Bowl while he collected 68 total tackles, 11.5 TFLs and five sacks.
CB Zach Lutmer: #17 Iowa at #18 Michigan (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)
Notre Dame CB Leonard Moore may have been as deserving of a mention, but given the matchup against a Purdue team they should cruise by, Lutmer gets the nod in a pivotal matchup. The 6-foot-1 defensive back enters the season a preseason All-American selection after being named an All-Big Ten selection in 2025, proving to be one of the Hawkeyes' biggest impact pieces. Lutmer also has some positional versatility given his fit in the Hawkeyes' defense.
CB Ellis Robinson IV: Georgia vs. Oklahoma (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)
Currently the team leader with four career interceptions, Robinson will get a chance to live up to the hype against an Oklahoma team looking to avenge upset against Michigan. Robinson started 12 games for the Bulldogs last season before starting in all three games in 2026 where he's been a mainstay in preseason accolades. The 6-foot ballhawk has been able to showcase his elite ball skills with big play ability while looking to minimize explosive plays allowed.
Edge Dylan Stewart, CB Vicari Swain: South Carolina vs. #8 Alabama (Saturday, 7 PM ET)
A DC native, Dylan Stewart has been labeled a first round talent ever since arguably his Gamecocks debut with his combination of speed and bend making him an elite prospect. A consistent mention among Bruce Feldman's annual 'Freaks List' through his college career, Stewart is coming off a 2025 season where he registered 12 TFLs, 4.5 sacks, eight QB hurries and three forced fumbles en route to an All-SEC second team selection. With K'Lavon Chaisson on a one year deal, could Stewart be an option if the Commanders are within reach?
Swain, meanwhile, offers intrigue both on defense and in the return game with already five punt returns for touchdowns through his career to set a South Carolina record. Yet the 6-foot cornerback also offers intrigue on defense, potentially giving NFL teams another fit for the explosive athlete. Could that elevate his standing?
DTs A'Mauri Washington, Bear Alexander: #20 Oregon at #12 USC (Saturday, 7:30 PM ET)
The Ducks have a pair of impact interior defensive linemen to watch with both Washington and Alexander drawing intrigue as first round picks. Washington, a 6-foot-3, 330-pound interior lineman, was a potential NFL Draft candidate last year where he's showcased himself as disruptive and asset against the run. Alexander, who began his career at Georgia before transferring to USC, has had productive spurts with 15 total tackles, 1.5 TFLs and one sack through the first three games. Both are among the early batch of names expected to come off the board on night one of the 2027 NFL Draft. With Daron Payne kicked off the final year of his contract, could either Duck defensive lineman be a candidate to replace him in Washington?
