If Western Michigan wins, it’s in the MAC Championship next weekend.
It’s on top of the conference with a 7-1 MAC record, and even if it loses, it has a real shot to get in thanks to wins over Toledo, Central Michigan, and Ohio.
But you don’t just walk into Rynearson Stadium on a Tuesday night and expect a light scrimmage.
It’s been a disappointing year, but the Eagles have been solid over the last few weeks. They pushed Ohio, beat Bowling Green and Ball State, and because this is what they do as a program, EVERY game is a close fight.
Win, and a 5-7 season would be a plus, especially if it breaks a two-game losing streak against one of the other directional Michigan schools.

Why Western Michigan Will Win
There’s nothing all that splashy about this bunch.
It runs well, there’s a decent passing game when it needs to come through, and the defense is fantastic at getting off the field.
It doesn’t get hit with a ton of penalties, the turnovers have dried up to a trickle over the last few weeks, and it won’t give Eastern Michigan any easy breaks to build on.
And yes, the Eagles might be playing relatively well lately, but they’re beating the MAC’s bottom feeders.
The offense has some pop, but the lack of a pass rush kills the defense, especially on third downs. However …
Why Eastern Michigan Will Win
The Eagles will score.
The offensive line has done a strong job of keeping teams out of the backfield, and that’s Job One when it comes to dealing with Western Michigan.
The Broncos bring the pressure, and while Eastern Michigan won’t stop what’s coming for the entire game, it should be able to hammer away with the running attack to slow down the aggressiveness.
For the most part, when the Eagles run for close to 150 yards or more, they win. Western Michigan has allowed close to 150 rushing yards or more seven times.

This is one of those in-state games that occasionally defies all logic and reason, and again, it’s Eastern Michigan. All five of its home games were decided by one score.
Western Michigan won’t run away with this – it doesn’t do that with its offense – but the defense will take over late when it needs to put the tight game away. And then it’s on to Detroit.
