‘We’ve Got to Find Out Why’ — Deion Sanders Puzzled About Colorado’s Issues, Insists Buffaloes Are ‘Better Than’ Opponents

Deion Sanders has once again started riding a roller coaster as the Colorado head coach, almost like in his first year with the program.
The Buffaloes started the season with two back-to-back wins, then began a downhill slide with two back-to-back losses to Northwestern and Baylor in Weeks 3 and 4.
Coach Prime has been mentioned in the hot-seat conversation this year, as many fans and analysts expect him to turn things around at Colorado, and while that hasn’t been the case yet, the head coach believes the team is better than it seems to be.
Deion Sanders Believes the Colorado Team Is Better Than What Was Seen
After a devastating 41-7 loss to Northwestern, Colorado fell to Baylor 23-13, despite Coach Prime making a few roster changes ahead of the Week 4 game.
In a press conference after the Baylor loss, Sanders claimed that the Buffaloes are actually better than their opponents; however, the results and scores don’t indicate that.
“We’re better than this. It seems as though we’re better than our opponents, but the score does not dictate that. And that’s the fascinating thing, we’ve got to find out why,” Sanders said.

One of the biggest storylines from the Colorado-Baylor game was when Sanders and Co. benched former 5-star recruit Julian Lewis, who ranks 118th on PFN’s CFB QB Impact Rankings.
Ever since Shedeur Sanders left Colorado, the quarterback situation has been a mess, which fans hoped would change this year as Lewis entered his second year with the program.
As the Buffs were struggling against Baylor while being down 10-3 at halftime, Sanders changed the quarterbacks.
Lewis was replaced by Utah transfer Isaac Wilson in the second half, and Wilson went on to complete 12-of-25 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown.
Lewis finished the game by completing 11 of 16 passes in the first half for just 75 yards, contributing to the Buffs’ 2-2 overall record.
Coach Prime gave the fans an insight into his mindset while making the decision about the quarterback change:
“It’s a plan, and you’ve got to stick with the plan,” Sanders said. “When you go to Sweetwyne, that’s more of a long-term type of thought process. When you go to Isaac, he’s going to get us in the right positions, and he’s going to do his thing. Now, we’ve got to assess everything and see where we’re going.”
Talking about Lewis’ future with the program, Coach Prime urged fans to not give up on the young quarterback.
“Don’t do that; don’t give up on JuJu. I think he plays with tremendous effort, tremendous heart and he’s not quitting. We’re not abandoning anybody; we just needed a change and inspiration at that time, in some kind of way,” Sanders said.

Lewis entered 2026 with substantial expectations. PFN identified him as a breakout candidate after he preserved his redshirt in 2025 and showed flashes during limited action.
