While the Iron Bowl approaches, while Auburn lurks in the way of Alabama football reaching its season-long goals of an SEC championship appearance and, potentially a College Football Playoff berth, the world continues to spin for defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.

Wommack’s focus is on leading Alabama‘s highly-touted defense into Jordan-Hare Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday, Nov. 29. But Wommack’s name has been circulating for a potential SEC head coaching job.

ESPN reported that Wommack is one of four coaches “linked to” the open coaching position at Arkansas along with USF coach Alex Golesh, Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield and North Texas coach Eric Morris.

“I appreciate the question, but I’m just not going to address any job opportunity stuff,” Wommack said Monday, Nov. 24.

Wommack played fullback at Arkansas from 2005-06 before transferring to Southern Miss.

Through 11 games in 2025, Alabama has the second-best scoring defense in the SEC and the 10th-best nationally, allowing 16.18 points per game. The Crimson Tide allows 270.45 yards per game − the best in the SEC and ninth-best nationally − and 4.8 yards per play.

As of Monday, Nov. 24, 13 active Division 1 head coaches were once on an Alabama football coaching staff: Bill O’Brien at Boston College, Charles Kelly at Jacksonville State, Steve Sarkisian at Texas, Charles Huff at Southern Miss, Mike Locksley at Maryland, Brent Key at Georgia Tech, Mario Cristobal at Miami, Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, Butch Jones at Arkansas State, Dabo Swinney at Clemson, Kirby Smart at Georgia, Dan Lanning at Oregon and Major Applewhite at South Alabama.

Wommack would be the first assistant coach in the Kalen DeBoer era at Alabama to leave for a head coaching position.

Alabama will take on Auburn at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29 on ABC.
