The stakes of this year’s matchup are a bit more dire as both teams need a win in order to keep their bowl eligibility hopes alive. Penn State and Michigan State come into this week with identical 3-6 records overall and dismal 0-6 records in Big Ten play. While this was not expected to be a spectacular season for the Spartans, this is a far cry from where Penn State anticipated this season would be sitting midway through November.
Penn State has already undergone an in-season coaching change wiht the removal of James Franklin. Interim head coach Terry Smith is searching for his first win after nearly pulling off a big upset of No. 2 Indiana last week. Smith likes what he saw from his defense last week and hopes things continue to develop for quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer this week in his fourth start.
On the other side, the pressure is mounting for Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith as his job security appears to be fading. If Michigan State continues to slide, could his job be in jeopardy? That remains to be seen. But it stands to reason that a win against Penn State would help his chances of retaining the job.
