One ESPN analyst provided an optimistic outlook on the Michigan Wolverines’ potential under head coach Kyle Whittingham ahead of the 2026 college football season.
Whittingham is going through the 22nd year of his head coaching career in college football, his first with the Wolverines. He enjoyed 21 incredible years as the Utah Utes’ leader, elevating the program to great heights as one of the best in the country.
Starting a new chapter at Michigan, Whittingham has high expectations awaiting him with the Wolverines given their national championship victory in 2023/4. Despite the early pressure, ESPN analyst Adam Rittenberg shared a positive stance on how the veteran coach can fare in his debut season at Ann Arbor.

“I’m big on longevity, consistency and overperforming recruiting rankings and resource allocation, and Whittingham checked all of those boxes at Utah. Whittingham has had one losing season since 2014, seven AP top-20 finishes and eight seasons of 10 or more wins, including last fall. He has navigated conference moves and other changes with player movement and compensation. His teams have been consistently elite at the line of scrimmage and flood the NFL draft. I’m fascinated to see what he can do at a program like Michigan,” Rittenberg wrote.
What lies ahead for Kyle Whittingham, Michigan
Kyle Whittingham and the Michigan Wolverines have a long season heading their way in 2026. Despite this, they look to achieve success as a premier program in the Big Ten Conference.
Whittingham looks forward to his time as Michigan’s head coach, spending the last 32 years at Utah. The Wolverines are coming off a 9-4 record in 2025, unable to make the cut for the College Football Playoff. They lost 41-27 to the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl to end the campaign.
The Wolverines will look forward to their start of the season, being at home. They take on the Western Michigan Broncos as kickoff is set for Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
