As the SEC commissioner, Greg Sankey holds considerable power, but even he is bound by legal agreements and contracts, particularly those related to the SEC Championship Game in football.

He can't simply break a deal and call off a high-profile game because a portion of the fan base isn't happy with the potential impact on their team ahead of the College Football Playoff. Nor does he want to.

Sankey spelled it out on "The Paul Finebaum Show" on April 29.

"We do have contracts, and you don’t just get to walk away from agreements," Sankey told Finebaum while talking about the SEC Championship Game. "That happens in college football a lot, as we’ve seen with individual decisions, but as an organization, we have a great relationship with the Atlanta Falcons, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the city of Atlanta. And so those should not just be microphone moments for people to opine."
