BATON ROUGE – Lane Kiffin was the most sought-after coach during this coaching carousel cycle.
And LSU football beat out every other suitor to land him, officially announcing his hire last week. Kiffin agreed to terms with LSU on a seven-year, $91 million contract that has plenty of incentives that could make him the highest-paid coach in college football at some point over the course of the deal. At his base salary of $13 million, he ranks second in the sport behind Georgia's Kirby Smart.
LSU wooed Kiffin away from Ole Miss where he was having his best season as a head coach and the program's best record in school history, leading the Rebels to an 11-1 regular season mark.
Ole Miss officially earned a College Football Playoff berth Sunday when the committee revealed it as the No. 6 seed. But Kiffin won't coach his former team in the postseason, meaning he has still not yet coached in a playoff game as a head coach.
So what can LSU fans expect from Kiffin as the head Tiger? Let's breakdown at his coaching record to find out.
Lane Kiffin overall coaching record
Kiffin has been the head coach four other colleges (Tennessee, USC, Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss) and had one brief stint in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.
Overall, Kiffin is 116-53. At his most recent stop, Ole Miss, Kiffin won 74.3% of his games for a 55-19 mark for his longest coaching tenure to this point in his career.
Lane Kiffin record vs ranked teams
You can bet that at LSU, much like with the Rebels, Kiffin is going to have to gameplan against a lot of ranked opponents, coaching in the Southeastern Conference.
His first game at LSU will be inside Tiger Stadium against Clemson, which will likely be a ranked matchup. How has he fared against ranked teams in his career?
Against top 25 teams, Kiffin owns a 13-24 record. Five of those losses came as FAU's head coach and playing teams like Ohio State and Oklahoma with severe talent gaps.
Lane Kiffin record in SEC play
Kiffin has spent sevens seasons as a head coach in the SEC, one at Tennessee back in 2009, and the last six at Ole Miss. In those seven years, a Kiffin-led team has had one losing conference record and that was Kiffin's first team in Oxford during the 2020 COVID-shortened, conference-only season.
Overall, Kiffin is 36-21 in SEC play in seven seasons, a 63.1% win percentage.
What's Lane Kiffin's record in rivalry games?
Across his coaching spectrum, there's a number of different rivalry matchups Kiffin's coached in from the Egg Bowl to the Shula Bowl to USC-Notre Dame.
In those contests, Kiffin's teams are 16-8. At FAU, the squad never lost to its rival FIU in the Shula Bowl and Kiffin's Ole Miss teams were 5-1 against arch rival Mississippi State.
