Every year, LSU football and Arkansas football play for one of the most unique trophies in college sports: the Golden Boot.
But what is the story behind Golden Boot Trophy?
The Golden Boot was created by businessman and former Arkansas linebacker David Bazzel in 1996. It is a 24-carat gold trophy shaped into the states of Arkansas and Louisiana. It’s nearly 4 feet tall, weighs almost 200 pounds, and is valued at $10,000. According to the LSU athletic department, the Golden Boot is believed to be the heaviest trophy in all of college football.
Although the Tigers and Razorbacks first played in 1901, they met 37 times before Arkansas joined the SEC, and even played four years as conference rivals without an official trophy. The first time the rivalry was dubbed the “Battle for the Golden Boot” was after Bazzel created the trophy in 1996. Since then, LSU has won it 20 times compared to Arkansas’ nine. The Tigers have retained the trophy for three straight years entering this year’s game, with the Razorbacks’ last win coming in 2021.
