What Made Kansas Jayhawks Choose Isaiah Marshall At QB?

The Kansas Jayhawks have made a decision regarding the starting quarterback.
On Monday, it was announced that Isaiah Marshall will start the season opener against Long Island University Friday in Lawrence. Jayhawks' coach Lance Leipold delivered the news at his first game week press conference of the season.
"Both players were playing extremely well. It was a very close competition," Leipold said. "[It came down to] who gives us the best chance to be the most complete offense that we can be, the most dynamic offense we can be. And through that evaluation by the offensive coaching staff, we came to the conclusion that Isaiah was that person."
A redshirt sophomore, Marshall doesn't have much experience. Last year he only started one game at quarterback but had nine appearances. He was 3 of 3 passing for 28 yards while rushing for 160 yards on 15 carries.
The decision may have surprised some fans and media members. He was in competition with Cole Ballard, who is a redshirt junior. Last year he completed 10 of 22 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 92 yards on 15 carries. Both competitors were playing behind last year's starter, Jalon Daniels, who is now the No. 2 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Starting Marshall could just be Leipold trying to get an idea where he stands. It's the perfect opportunity game because the Jayhawks are up against an LIU team they should dominate. Last week LIU was manhandled by FCS power North Dakota, falling behind 42-0 before halftime.
Marshall is in no position to get comfortable because this could be just a temporary moves. There's still a chance of Ballard overtaking him for the top spot at some this season. But for now, Marshall is the player in charge of the KU offense.
Kickoff is Friday at 7 p.m., at Memorial Stadium.
