Memphis athletic director Ed Scott confirmed Nov. 30 that football coach Ryan Silverfield has left ahead of the expected announcement that he will be named the next Arkansas coach.

“We thank Coach Silverfield for his leadership over the past six seasons and wish him and his family the best in their next chapter,” Scott said in a statement. “Reggie Howard will serve as the interim head coach. “We are excited about the future of Memphis Football and the momentum of our program. A national search for our next head coach is underway, and we are committed to finding a leader who reflects our values, prioritizes student-athlete development, and shares our vision for elevating the program nationally.”

This will be Scott’s first major hire since he took over as athletic director in the summer of 2024.

Memphis will be incentivized to move quickly. The early signing day period starts Dec. 3, and the Tigers will want to do whatever they can to keep their recruiting class together.

The Tigers (8-4, 4-4 American Conference) will learn their bowl destination on Dec. 7.
