OXFORD, MS ― South Carolina football is far from where it wants to be as the Gamecocks’ 30-14 loss to Ole Miss on Nov. 1 marked their fourth straight defeat.

The Gamecocks (3-6, 1-6 SEC) have lost six of the last seven games but have a break in play, with an open date before a difficult road game against No. 3 Texas A&M on Nov. 15.

Coach Shane Beamer fired his offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley on Oct. 12 and three losses later, continues to field questions about staffing changes.

“Yeah I’ll look at it. We’ve obviously got to get a lot fixed,” Beamer said when asked, referencing a week of practice without a game coming up. “Everybody in that locker room right now.”

South Carolina has scored more than 25 points just twice this season, only once in an SEC game and came into the game with the No. 8 Rebels (8-1, 5-1) averaging a conference-low 20.4 points per game.

Before the loss, the Gamecocks were No. 126 of 134 FBS teams in total offense with 302.1 total yards per game but will head into the open date averaging 294.1 per game.

The last time South Carolina averaged fewer yards was 1999, when the Gamecocks went 0-11 and finished with 228.6 total yards per game in Lou Holtz’s first season as coach.

What Shane Beamer said about LaNorris Sellers

Quarterback LaNorris Sellers went 16-of-30 for 180 passing yards in the loss but had two interceptions and was sacked six times for a loss of 51 yards. He finished with two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing) but minus-17 rushing yards on 15 carries.

“Yeah he’s giving us a chance to win,” Beamer said of Sellers. “Like always, there’s plays he’d liked to have back … like all of us, there’s decisions I’d like to have back, plays he’d like to have back, all of us but LaNorris Sellers gives us a chance to win football games each and every week. We as a staff have to continue to do a good job of helping our players be their very best.”

Last year Sellers finished with 238 or more passing yards in six different games and only had negative rushing yardage once. With three games left, he’s finished with 238 or more passing yards once and negative rushing yards in four different games.

South Carolina was just 3-of-13 on third-down conversions. The Gamecocks were 1-of-3 on fourth down and finished with only 50 rushing yards, their second-worst total all season.

Sellers has only thrown seven touchdowns in nine games but Beamer said he hasn’t seen a change in his demeanor. He said he’s the leader he needs to be by staying “poised” but as a competitor he hates to lose.

South Carolina is one of nine teams out of 134 that aren’t averaging over 300 total yards per game.

“It sucks where we are right now record wise,” Beamer said. “He along with everyone else in that locker room feels that way.”
