Auburn football quarterback Deuce Knight will get his first start of the season.
Interim coach DJ Durkin announced Knight as the starter on Nov. 20 as Auburn (4-6) faces FCS Mercer (9-1) on Nov. 22 (1 p.m., SEC Network) at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The 6-foot-4, 217-pound freshman has appeared in one game this season, completing two passes for 20 yards and rushing four times for 16 yards in Auburn’s 43-3 blowout win over Ball State on Sept. 6.
Knight will get the start over Auburn’s Jackson Arnold, who has appeared in nine games this season. Arnold has 1,278 passing yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions. Durkin said both are expected to play.
Knight, the Lucedale native, was a star at George County, where he had 2,238 passing yards and 37 total touchdowns his senior season. He credited career totals of 7,855 passing yards with 56 touchdowns and added 1,361 rushing yards with 31 scores.
Knight was a four-star recruit and the No. 2 player in Mississippi, according to 247Sports Composite. The 18-year-old was a 2024 Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen, a U.S. Navy All-American Bowl participant and was the quarterback for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.
Knight had started at George County in 2022, then transferred to Lipscomb Academy in Nashville in late July 2023, appearing in three games that season. He then moved back to George County for his senior year.
He was a Notre Dame commit but later decommitted and committed to Auburn on Oct. 2, 2024.
Auburn has lost two straight games after a 33-24 win against Arkansas on Oct. 25.
