When does Ohio State football play again? CFP schedule update

Ohio State officially has a Cotton Bowl opponent, as Miami defeated Texas A&M 10-3 on Dec. 20 to advance to the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

The last time Ohio State matched up with Miami was in 2011, when the Hurricanes defeated the Buckeyes 24-6. Ohio State has a 2-2 record against the Hurricanes.

Ohio State earned the No. 2 seed in the playoff despite falling to Indiana 13-10 at the Big Ten championship after going undefeated in the regular season. If the Buckeyes make it to the end and win the championship, it would be the first time in school history that they repeat national titles.

Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (4) celebrates with wide receiver Carnell Tate (17) during the first half of the Big Ten Conference championship game against the Indiana Hoosiers at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Dec. 6, 2025.

The winner of the Cotton Bowl will go onto the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix on Jan. 8 to face either Georgia, Tulane or Ole Miss.

When does Ohio State play next?

The Buckeyes host the Hurricanes The game will air on ESPN and kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Ohio State vs. Miami scouting report

These three factors and players will likely have the biggest impact on the outcome for this matchup.

1. The Buckeyes getting Carnell Tate more invovled

Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate missed three games this season due to injury, but returned to action against Michigan on Nov. 29.

Since Tate got back on the field, he has recorded nine catches and two touchdowns. Against Indiana, Tate was targeted just four times, though the junior still managed to score a touchdown.

If quarterback Julian Sayin can split the load between Tate and receiver Jeremiah Smith, the Buckeyes’ offense will be in good shape.

2. Which defensive line holds stronger between Ohio State, Miami

Ohio State and Miami are both ranked in the top 10 nationally in rushing defense, with the Buckeyes allowing just 84.5 rushing yards per game and the Hurricanes allowing 86.8.

In the first round, Miami held Texas A&M to 89 yards on the ground and forced two fumbles and recorded seven sacks.

While the Buckeyes record a larger portion of their offense in the air, the offensive line finding holes in the Hurricanes’ defense to open the running game could be a difference maker in the matchup.

Ohio State Buckeyes running back Bo Jackson (25) runs through Indiana Hoosiers linebacker Rolijah Hardy (21) during the Big Ten Conference championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Dec. 6, 2025. Ohio State lost 13-10.

3. Making field goals

At the Big Ten championship, Ohio State kicker Jayden Fielding missed a game-tying field goal in the fourth quarter from the 27-yard line. Miami kicker Carter Davis also struggled in his most recent outing, going 1 for 4 against Texas A&M.

Fielding has made 16 field goals (84.2% accuracy) while Davis hit 14 field goals (87.5% accuracy).

If the score is close, Fielding and Davis bouncing back from their previous errors could be crucial for their respective teams.

Ohio State vs. Miami prediction

If the Hurricanes wait until the fourth quarter to score a touchdown as they did in the first round, Ohio State should have little difficulty picking up a victory. Ohio State’s defense has given up the fewest number of touchdowns (10) nationally and can capitalize on the Hurricanes’ lack of momentum.

The Buckeyes have yet to finish a game without a touchdown this season, averaging just over 35 points per game.

The key for Ohio State at the start of its playoff campaign is being consistent and continuing to have the performances it had in the regular season.
