The Orange Bowl matchup is set with the Texas Tech football team set to take on Oregon in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.
The fifth-seeded Ducks advanced to face the fourth-seeded Red Raiders (12-1) after handling No. 12 James Madison 51-34 in the first round at Eugene. The Big 12 Conference champion Red Raiders have been off since beating BYU in the title game on Dec. 6.
Here’s what to know about the matchup, plus a quick prediction for the game.
When does Texas Tech play next?
The Red Raiders take on the Ducks on Jan. 31 from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The game will air on ESPN and kick off at 11 a.m. Central.
Texas Tech football vs Oregon scouting report
These three factors and players will likely have the biggest impact on the outcome for this matchup.
1. Texas Tech must contain Oregon QB Dante Moore
The Red Raiders have not faced a pure passing quarterback like Oregon’s Dante Moore. Projected to be one of the top picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, Moore is steady as they come, completing 72% of his passes this season for 3,046 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to just 8 interceptions. The Ducks are also getting healthier at receiver, meaning Moore will have more options to throw to against Texas Tech.
2. Has Oregon or Texas Tech played a harder schedule so far?
Oregon’s top opponent this year was Indiana, the No. 1 team in the CFP field that has a similar setup to Texas Tech. The Hoosiers have a very tough defense and an offense capable of lighting up the scoreboard. Indiana beat Oregon in Eugene, but that came months ago. Texas Tech, meanwhile, hasn’t faced a team that can sling it around the field like Oregon can, playing mostly run-heavy teams like BYU (twice).
3. Texas Tech has to cash in touchdowns in the red zone
One of Texas Tech’s biggest issues this year has been settling for field goals instead of scoring touchdowns in the red zone. That won’t fly against the Ducks. The Red Raiders need to keep kicker Stone Harrington off the field as much as possible inside the Oregon 20-yard line and convert TDs.
Texas Tech vs Oregon prediction
We’ll have a more thorough breakdown of the game next week, but initial reaction is Texas Tech has as good a shot at beating Oregon as anybody else in the CFP field. However, it’s fair to say the Ducks have seen competition closer to the Red Raiders than the Red Raiders have seen that resembles the Ducks. To start, we’ll pick Oregon to win 37-35.
