AUBURN — When Auburn football hosts the 90th installment of the Iron Bowl this weekend, it’ll be searching for its first win against Alabama in a long while.

The Tigers haven’t beaten the Crimson Tide, their arch rival, in six years. They last did so, beating Alabama 48-45, in 2019 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Alabama has posted a six-game win streak since, and that Auburn victory was a brief flip in the series narrative, as the Tigers are just 4-11 against the Crimson Tide since 2010.

While it’s one of the most-famed rivalries in the sport, the Iron Bowl has largely gone in favor of the team in Tuscaloosa. Alabama leads the all-time series 51-37-1 in a rivalry that dates back to 1893.

Ahead of this rivalry’s latest chapter, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, (ABC) here’s a breakdown of the history.

Why coaching matchups have made recent Iron Bowl history unique

It’ll be interim Auburn head coach DJ Durkin leading the charge against Alabama and Kalen DeBoer. It’s also the seventh consecutive Iron Bowl which includes a different matchup of head coaches. Assuming the Tigers don’t hire Durkin as Hugh Freeze’s full-time replacement, it’ll be eighth consecutive Iron Bowls with different head coaches in 2026.

Here’s a look at how the coaching matchups have looked since 2019:

  • 2025: DJ Durkin (Auburn) vs. Kalen DeBoer (Alabama)
  • 2024: Hugh Freeze (Auburn) vs. DeBoer
  • 2023: Freeze vs. Nick Saban (Alabama)
  • 2022: Carnell Williams (Auburn) vs. Saban
  • 2021: Bryan Harsin (Auburn) vs. Saban
  • 2020: Gus Malzahn (Auburn) vs. Steve Sarkisian (Alabama)
  • 2019: Malzahn vs. Saban

When did Auburn football last win Iron Bowl?

Then-No. 5 Alabama was a 3.5-point favorite against a 16th-ranked Auburn team in 2019, but the underdog pulled out a 48-45 victory as a missed field goal sealed the Crimson Tide’s fate.

Alabama and Auburn traded fourth-quarter leads once each. A Mac Jones touchdown pass put the Crimson Tide ahead with 13:44 to go, but Auburn running back Shaun Shivers secured the final score with 8:08 remaining. Alabama kicker Joseph Bulovas couldn’t convert a 30-yard field goal that would’ve tied the game with two minutes to go, and Auburn kneeled out for a victory.

What are Auburn football, Alabama’s largest Iron Bowl win streaks?

Alabama has the largest winning streak in the series history, with nine consecutive victories from 1973 to 1981. The closest Auburn has come was a six-game win streak from 2002 to 2007.

Including its latest stretch, Alabama has three separate winning streaks of at least five games. Auburn has just two, including a five-game streak from 1954-58.
