The Oklahoma Sooners have enjoyed a strong start to the 2027 high school recruiting cycle, and with less than eight months remaining until the Early Signing Period, OU has a chance to wind up with one of the top classes in the nation.

The Sooners currently have a total of 20 players committed in the ’27 class, with 12 commits on the offensive side of the ball, and eight commits on the defensive side of the ball. Aside from special teams, where OU doesn’t yet have any commits, Oklahoma currently has at least one player committed to play each position on its roster.

With Oklahoma’s roster for the 2026 season now at 110 total players with the return of linebacker Owen Heinecke, the next wave of true freshmen in the ’27 class will be counted upon to help replenish the OU roster next offseason.

ESPN ranked their top classes to this point in the 2027 cycle, and Oklahoma came in at No. 1, a testament to the work that general manager Jim Nagy and head coach Brent Venables have put in to build a strong class so far.

“After a disappointing 2024, Brent Venables was able to steer the Sooners into the College Football Playoff in part thanks to the top defensive unit in the SEC. Working to build off last season’s success, they continue to add talent that can help keep that unit a strength, especially in the front seven.” – Craig Haubert, ESPN.

On offense, the OU list of commits is headlined by quarterback Jamison Roberts, tight end Seneca Driver, and offensive linemen Cooper Hackett and Kaeden Penny. Defensively, Oklahoma’s commit list is highlighted by defensive lineman Krew Jones, and linebackers Cooper Witten and Taven Epps. The Sooners had a particularly productive “Future Freaks” event back in March, landing five commitments in two days, including Roberts and Driver.

There’s still a long ways to go for the 2027 class, and there will obviously be twists and turns, additions to and subtractions from the current list of 20 players committed to the Sooners between now and December. However, Nagy and Venables have OU off to an excellent start in this cycle, and Oklahoma is setting the pace right now in the early stages of the process.
