The dust has settled, and the College Football Playoff field is set. Fresh off a three-point loss to Indiana in the Big Ten Championship, the Ohio StateBuckeyes are the No. 2 seed and still the odds-on favorite to win a national championship.
As the Buckeyes prepare for another title run, it got us thinking: where do things stand all-time in terms of CFP wins? There have been 11 years of playoffs with a four-team format from 2014 to 2023, followed by a move to a 12-team format this past year. In that time, there have been some usual suspects, but how do the top five rank in terms of all-time wins?
Many teams have made appearances, but there's something to be said about consistency. Programs such as Washington and Oregon get invited to the dance every so often, but haven't made much of their time, leaving with just one win each and two losses. Other programs, such as Michigan, LSU, Texas, and Penn State, have just two wins all-time in the CFP; however, the Wolverines and Tigers made the most of their appearances, winning titles in 2020 (LSU) and 2023 (Michigan).
But what about the rest? Who has the most wins all-time in the history of the College Football Playoff? Let's take a look.
No. 5 – Notre Dame Fighting Irish
CFP Record: 3-3
Appearances: 3 (2018, 2020, 2024)
Championships Won: 0
Notre Dame has made the CFP three times since the playoff format began. Some believe the Fighting Irish should have made it a fourth invite this year, but to no avail. Up until the 2024 CFP, Notre Dame had been one-and-done before making a run all the way to the National Championship last season. Of course, Ohio State would take the Irish down, denying them their first title since 1988.
No. 4 – Georgia Bulldogs
CFP Record: 5-2
Appearances: 5 (2017, 2021, 2022, 2024, 2025*)
Championships Won: 2 (2021, 2022)
Georgia has been as steady as they come in the past five seasons of college football. Kirby Smart woke a sleeping giant and has gotten the Bulldogs over the hump to being a perennial power. With another outstanding team in 2025, UGA has a chance to add to its CFP win total.

No. 3 – Clemson Tigers
CFP Record: 6-5
Appearances: 7 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2024)
Championships Won: 2(2016, 2018)
Clemson has fallen off track in recent years, but there was a period of time from 2015 to 2020 when the Tigers were playing for a national championship almost every year. Many thought Dabo had another contender this year, but Clemson massively underperformed. Fans in Death Valley are getting more and more impatient after experiencing so much success early on. Has the window closed or will the Tigers rise again?
No. 2 – Ohio State Buckeyes
CFP Record: 7-4
Appearances: 7 (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2024, 2025*)
Championships Won: 2(2014, 2024)
Ohio State owns the honor of winning the first-ever College Football Playoff in 2014 and the first winner in the 12-team format. The Buckeyes have been a constant presence in the CFP, even while being inexplicably left out from time to time, with the most egregious example coming in 2015. OSU will look to add to its total in 2025 and become only the second back-to-back champion in the CFP era.

No. 1 – Alabama Crimson Tide
CFP Record: 9-5
Appearances: 9 (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2025*)
Championships Won: 3 (2015, 2017, 2020)
Alabama has been the gold standard when it comes to the College Football Playoff. No program has more appearances, more wins, or more titles than the Crimson Tide. However, with Nick Saban gone, 'Bama feels a little less invincible.
