Gunner Stockton began this season with questions in some circles about how he would handle being Georgia football’s starting quarterback. He is finishing it up with a trip to the College Football Playoff and as a top 10 finisher in Heisman Trophy voting.

Stockton finished seventh in this year’s voting, according to a reveal on Thursday, Dec. 11, on ESPN of those that finished after the top four vote getters.

The redshirt junior is the second Georgia quarterback to finish in the top 10 in the last four seasons. Stetson Bennett was No. 4 in 2022.

Stockton finished in the same spot as Georgia cornerback/wide receiver Champ Bailey did in 1998 and quarterbacks Eric Zeier in 1994 and Ray Goff in 1976.

Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, Notre Dame running Jeremiyah Love and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin are finalists for Saturday night’s ceremony.

Stockton also finished behind Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who was fifth, and Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who was sixth.

Ballots went out to 930 electors. That includes 870 media members, 59 living Heisman winners and a fan vote was counted as one overall vote.

Stockton showed toughnness and grit for a Bulldogs team that went 12-1 and won the SEC Championship and is the No. 3 seed in the CFP.

Stockton was named MVP in Georgia’s 28-7 SEC Championship victory over Alabama on Saturday in Atlanta.

He completed 20 of 26 passes for 156 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed for 39 yards on 13 carries.

The redshirt junior has completed 70.7% of his passes with 23 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and rushed for 442 yards and 8 touchdowns.

He directed fourth-quarter comebacks against Tennessee, Ole Miss and Florida.
