Life in the world of SEC football is a grind.

The conference is arguably the deepest and most talented in college football, stacked from nearly top to bottom with competitive programs that devote a significant amount of emotional energy and financial resources to winning games. Even the games that appear to be easy on a team’s league schedule seldom are.

In Week 11, however, Ole Miss will get a break from that unforgiving slog.

As coach Lane Kiffin’s Rebels continue their push for a spot in the College Football Playoff, they’ll host The Citadel on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Ole Miss is one of many SEC teams taking on an opponent from the FCS Southern Conference in November, a practice that has occurred for years within the league to offer up something of a final regular-season tune-up amidst its eight-game conference schedule, which will pivot to nine games next season.

While many Rebels fans are familiar with the late detour from conference play, they may not know quite as much about the team they’ll be facing off against on Saturday.

Given that, here’s a closer look at The Citadel:

Where is The Citadel?

The Citadel is a military college located in Charleston, South Carolina.

The university was founded in 1842 as the South Carolina Military Academy.

The Citadel’s athletic programs compete in the Southern Conference, of which the school has been a member since 1936.

The Citadel mascot

The Citadel’s athletic teams are known as the Bulldogs, all of which compete at the Division I level, except for its football program, which is in the FCS with all the other schools in the Southern Conference.

The Citadel football record

In its third season under coach Maurice Drayton, The Citadel is 4-5, which includes a 3-3 mark in conference play.

Over the past 26 full seasons, the Bulldogs have finished with a winning record just four times. Since the start of the 2020 season, they’re 19-47.

Ole Miss record vs. The Citadel

Saturday’s game will be just the second ever between Ole Miss and The Citadel. Their first and only meeting came in 2005, a 27-7 Rebels victory in their first season under Ed Orgeron. In the win, Ole Miss held the Bulldogs to just 81 total yards, with The Citadel’s only points coming on an interception returned for a touchdown.
