Where LSU football stands with Louisiana's best recruits

LSU football has been red hot on the recruiting trail in recent weeks. The Tigers are in the midst of building a top-10 class in 2027, which is always the expectation at LSU. With Lane Kiffin as head coach and LSU’s top-notch resources, LSU should have no problem landing elite talent.
But how is LSU doing with the top recruits in Louisiana? One of the primary reasons Kiffin took the LSU job is LSU’s access to in-state talent. Not many states in the US have the volume of blue-chip prospects that Louisiana does. Plus, LSU doesn’t have to compete with another Power Four program in Louisiana.
Louisiana’s 2027 class is among the best we’ve seen in some time. Four five-star prospects headline the group, including tight end Ahmad Hudson, who’s already committed to LSU.
Today, we’ll take a look at where LSU stands with the top 15 players in the state. I’ve included any player ranked in the top-15 by at least one major recruiting service, so we’ll look at about 20 players. Let’s jump right in.
Elite Louisiana prospects already committed to LSU
| Player | Pos | Rivals Industry | Rivals | 247 | ESPN |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmad Hudson | TE | 4 | 3 | 3 | 1 |
| Peyton Houston | QB | 5 | 6 | 5 | 5 |
| Trey Martin | RB | 6 | 7 | 7 | 8 |
| Braylon Calais | ATH | 7 | 14 | 6 | 6 |
| Markez Davis | CB | 19 | 35 | 12 | 18 |
Hudson, the No. 4 player in the state, is the headliner of LSU’s 2027 class. From Ruston, LA, Hudson hopes to be a two-sport athlete, playing football and basketball at the college level. Hudson is a massive get for LSU, but the Tigers will have to fend off major programs to keep him. Nebraska is still in the race. Hudson will arrive at LSU just as Trey’Dez Green departs for the NFL, giving LSU a successor at the tight end position.
Peyton Houston is one of three blue-chip QBs from Louisiana in the class of 2027. He impressed at the Elite 11 earlier this Summer and has seen his recruiting rating jump in recent months. Houston committed to LSU when Brian Kelly was the coach, but stuck with the Tigers through the coaching transition. The new staff likes what they see in the Louisiana passer.
Trey Martin, Braylon Calais, and Markez Davis round out the in-state group already committed to LSU. Martin is a dynamic running back who has the chance to be an immediate impact player in 2027.
Elite Louisiana prospects committed elsewhere
| Player | Pos | Committed | Rivals Industry | Rivals | 247 | ESPN |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easton Royal | WR | Texas | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Elijah Haven | QB | Alabama | 2 | 5 | 1 | 1 |
| Miguel Whitley | WR | Ole Miss | 8 | 4 | 19 | 10 |
| Kaston Lewis | S | Texas Tech | 9 | 8 | 17 | 11 |
| Malachi Zeigler | QB | SMU | 10 | 16 | 13 | 7 |
| Jayden Miles | RB | Florida State | 14 | 12 | 11 | 12 |
| Juelz Batiste | EDGE | Ole Miss | 15 | 11 | 15 | 15 |
| Bra’jon Melancon | ATH | Kansas State | 17 | 15 | 14 | — |
| Javon Vital Jr. | RB | USC | 18 | 17 | 20 | 15 |
| Ashton Stark | WR | Kansas State | 20 | 22 | 23 | 14 |
A decent chunk of Louisiana prospects are pledged elsewhere and set to leave the state. At first glance, this is a red flag. LSU isn’t used to this many of the state’s top prospects leaving. But LSU shouldn’t be concerned. For starters, two players in this group are quarterbacks. LSU was always only going to be able to land one of the Louisiana blue-chip QBs this year.
Jayden Miles and Javon Vital aren’t cause for concern either. Both are running backs, and LSU already has three 2027 running backs committed.
A few players on this list weren’t even offered by LSU.
Five-star wide receiver Easton Royal is a flip target for LSU
The one player on the committed elsewhere LSU that LSU really doesn’t want to see leave the state if five-star wide receiver Eason Royal. The New Orleans native is currently committed to Texas, but LSU hasn’t backed off. This is a race.
LSU is never out of the running for elite New Orleans prospects, and we’ve seen LSU pull off late flips before. The Tigers have built momentum with Royal in recent months as he’s made several trips to Baton Rouge.
Elite Louisiana prospects who remain uncommitted
| Player | Pos | Rivals Industry | Rivals | 247 | ESPN |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Albert Simien | IOL | 3 | 2 | 4 | 4 |
| Jayden Anding | S | 11 | 9 | 9 | 13 |
| Karon Eugene | S | 12 | 18 | 10 | 9 |
| Jaden Bayonne | DL | 13 | 10 | 16 | 14 |
| Ethan Kimmie | WR | 16 | 21 | 8 | 11 |
| Marvin Joseph | S | 29 | 13 | 25 | — |
Six Louisiana prospects ranking top-15 in at least one major ranking remain uncommitted. The best of which is five-star guard Albert Simien. LSU was in the race for Simien, but most projections have the elite offensive linemen trending elsewhere.
However, the Tigers are firmly in the mix for blue-chip safety Jayden Anding. Rivals and 247Sports rank Anding as a top-10 safety in the class.
