Texas A&M’s future running back rotation, like many in the SEC, isn’t set in stone after the 2026 season, given that the transfer portal and NFL opportunities will always affect the outlook, especially for redshirt junior Rueben Owens. Combined with sophomore Jamarion Morrow, the Aggies’ current running back room is more than capable of leading the offense to greater heights this fall.
The Aggies’ No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class is all but complete, looking to land blue-chip wide receivers Eric McFarland and Damani Warren this week, followed by five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who will announce his commitment next Wednesday. However, after landing five-star KJ Edwards and four-star Carsyn Baker in the 2026 signing class, the Aggies have yet to land a running back in the 2027 cycle.
Earlier this month, coach Mike Elko and assistant head coach/RB coach Trooper Taylor hosted priority five-star running back Landen Williams-Callis, who received an early prediction to land with the Aggies, and according to several sources, is focused on choosing a program that will pave the way for him to compete for a starting job during his freshman season.
While Texas A&M was the heavy favorite, the Texas Longhorns have closed the gap after hosting the five-star back last weekend, with Rivals’ RMP currently favoring the Aggies at 53% and Texas at a close 47%. SMU is also a school to watch, and according to Rivals insider Steve Wiltfong, this recruiting battle will likely come down to the final days before his commitment.
“There is a buzz around Texas regarding the No. 3 running back in the country in Landen Williams-Callis, but SMU is another to keep an eye on and Texas A&M will continue to battle as well. The Longhorns have Rivals No. 7 class and hosted Williams-Callis this past weekend.”
It’s important to note that having KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker in the fold for the next two to three seasons provides Elko and Taylor plenty of leverage if they lose out on Williams-Callis.
