SMU entered the 2026 season with hopes of crashing the 12-team College Football Playoff for the second time in three years, with a proven quarterback and a bright young coach who remained with the program despite interest from elsewhere.

This weekend, the Mustangs will aim to continue the quest to get back to the sport's biggest stage.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings and No. 22 SMU will host Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 17 in a Week 7 matchup at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. It will be the fourth ACC game of the season for both teams.

After entering the season at No. 20 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, the Mustangs suffered an early setback in a 41-31 loss at Louisville in Week 3. Part of that loss could be attributed to Jennings' three turnovers. Since then, they've beaten Missouri State and Boston College, albeit by only 19 points combined. Oct. 17's game against Virginia will be the third of six consecutive games against teams currently ranked outside the top 25 of the Coaches Poll.

Standing in the way of SMU's ACC championship hopes is a Virginia team that's 4-2 at the halfway mark of the regular season. The Cavaliers rebounded from a humbling 31-point loss at Florida State with a 28-25 win Oct. 10 against Syracuse. Despite coming out on top, Virginia was outgained 430-288.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Wednesday, Oct. 14.

  • Spread: SMU (-8.5)
  • Over/under: 51.5 points
  • Moneyline: SMU (-325) ∣ Virginia (+270)

Prediction: SMU 41, Virginia 24

The Mustangs' proclivity for turning the ball over could make this closer than it should be, but Kevin Jennings and company should have their way with a Cavaliers squad that hasn't looked particularly impressive since a season-opening rout against NC State back in Week 0.
