Miami football succeeded in keeping its College Football Playoff aspirations alive another week. But the Hurricanes still have a long way to climb.
UM may have done irreparable damage when it lost in overtime at SMU to kick off November, but at least Mario Cristobal's squad rebounded for a resounding 38-10 win over Syracuse on Nov. 8. Carson Beck threw for a touchdown and caught another, with the night ending on a designed score for standout offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa.
In the initial CFP rankings, Miami popped in at No. 18. They got some favorable results in their effort to move into the bracket: Fellow ACC teams Virginia and Louisville both lost to unranked teams at home, and Vanderbilt needed overtime to fend off Auburn. The bad news is that only moved UM up to No. 16 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, and there's still about a half-dozen more teams they'll have to jump to break into the 12-team CFP field.
The Hurricanes have three more weeks to make their move with just one game, this Saturday vs. North Carolina State, at home. Here's a look at how Miami fared in the Nov. 11 CFP rankings update:

How many teams in College Football Playoff 2025?
The playoff field expanded to 12 teams in 2024. The five highest-ranked conference champions will earn automatic berths into the field, with the other seven spots filled out by the highest-ranked teams remaining. The big change for the 2025 CFP comes in seeding for the playoffs: Rather than the four first-round byes going to conference champions regardless of their rank, those spots now go to the top four teams in the final rankings.
When next College Football Playoff rankings come out
