The time between the end of the regular season and Louisville football’s Boca Raton Bowl game against Toledo is a juggling act for head coach Jeff Brohm. The Cardinals’ third-year coach must balance player retention, the early signing day for high school prospects and bowl preparations, which won’t include everyone. Players have the option of opting out of the bowl game as they prepare for the next level.
Though quarterback Miller Moss was noncommittal after UofL’s Governor’s Cup victory over Kentucky, Moss will play in the Boca Raton Bowl.
“It’s your obligation to the guys you’ve worked year round with to give everything you have regardless of how you’re feeling,” Moss said. “… At the end of the day, I’m apart of a much bigger group and I think the entire team’s attitude throughout the year has been to battle through adversity when things haven’t gone our way.”
UofL will be without wide receiver Chris Bell, who reportedly tore his ACL against SMU. The health status of running backs Isaac Brown, Keyjuan Brown and Duke Watson for the game has yet to be determined. Brohm said he’s hopeful that “one of the three can play and if more, that would be great.”
Defensive backs Daeh McCullough and Destin Cheirs as well as quarterback Brady Allen won’t be available for the game after announcing their intentions to transfer when the portal opens on Jan. 2. Louisville will be without even more players as opt-out announcements are made in the days leading up to the Dec. 23 contest.
Here’s a current list of players who have opted out of the Boca Raton Bowl game:
Rene Konga, Defensive lineman
Konga started at defensive tackle for the Cardinals this season and totaled 29 tackles, five for loss, 1 1/2 sacks, six pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.
Wesley Bailey, Defensive lineman
After transferring from Rutgers, Bailey earned a starting spot as an edge rusher for the Cardinals and had the second-most sacks (six) while producing 39 tackles, seven for loss, and five quarterback hurries.
