Which offense is worse: UNC 2025 or Clemson 2026?

After watching LSU destroy Clemson, we all wondered how much of that was LSU and how much of that Clemson? The following Saturday, Clemson struggled mightily with Georgia Southern, while Louisiana Tech put up a much better fight against LSU than Clemson did. As a result, the answer seems to be a bit of both. LSU’s good. Clemson’s bad, primarily on offense.

As I watched Clemson’s offense surrender 11 tackles for loss against Georgia Southern, scoring one touchdown and five field goals on fifteen offensive possessions, I asked myself if Clemson’s 2026 offense might be as bad as UNC’s 2025 offense. To the eye test, the entire operation of Clemson’s offense appeared every bit as disjointed and confused as UNC’s offense appeared for most of last season. I made a point to myself to compare some stats when I had some time later in the week.

So, here are some of those stats:

You are correct, a two game sample (Clemson) versus a 12 game sample (UNC) isn’t really valid. This isn’t a proof. It’s just wild that the comparison can even be made. UNC’s offense last year was thrown together with duck tape and bailing wire by two guys who didn’t know what they didn’t know until it was too late. Clemson’s offense is the result of supposedly careful and calculated decisions by Dabo Sweeney.

The one common link to these two offenses would be former UNC offensive coordinator, Freddie Kitchens. If you don’t know, UNC paid Kitchens $1.2 million to not coach its offense this season, so Kitchens now works for Sweeney as a volunteer on UNC’s dime. If Freddie has a hand in Clemson’s unfolding offensive debacle, and if that debacle continues tomorrow, then it’s not entirely money wasted.
