The College Football Playoff national championship game between Indiana and Miami will have a Big 12 crew officiating the game on Monday, Jan. 19.

There’s always talk about officiating crews, especially in big games like this one. However, leading college football voice Pat McAfee said it’s one of the best groups of officials his crew as seen.

“The good news for tonight’s game?” McAfee said on the “Pat McAfee Show” a few hours before kickoff. “This is the best officiating crew that we’ve seen. We’ve been doing this for a couple years now on the field, a lot of interactions with the refs.”

The same officiating crew was also on call for Texas A&M-Miami in the first round of the CFP.

Officiating crew for Indiana-Miami in national championship game

A Big 12 crew led by Michael VanderVelde will officiate the national championship game between Indiana and Miami on Jan. 19.

VanderVelde, a Big 12 official since 2020, has officiated the 2023 and 2024 Rose Bowls. He also officiated the Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia last season.

McAfee offered high praise of VanderVelde on his show Jan. 19.

“He’s got a lot of moxie, he’s very comfortable and he lets the boys play,” McAfee said. “This crew lets the boys play. They like football, they appreciate being there and I think the college world got it right with this group.”
