The Kentucky Wildcats have had a rough last few decades as a football program, but to be frank, there have been some really quality seasons under the leadership of Mark Stoops.

While the split should be seen as a positive and Will Stein has ushered in a new era, the Cats have shown promise in the past. Stein and company are now recruiting at a high level and should be able to bring this program to the heights that it saw under Stoops.

Looking at the past, there has been one name that sticks out as the enemy for the Cats, and that's Steve Spurrier. ESPN went as far as to call him the Cats' archenemy, but he was among the names that terrorized many SEC programs.

Here's what ESPN's Eli Lederman wrote.

"Few, if any, SEC foes have tormented Kentucky quite like Florida over the past 40 years. That reality is underscored by the Wildcats' 31-game losing streak to the Gators from 1987 to 2017, the fourth longest in an uninterrupted series in NCAA history, highlighted by Danny Wuerffel and Chris Doering's late rally in the 1993 matchup. No one, seemingly, savored Florida's dominance more than former Gators coach Spurrier, who routinely jabbed the Wildcats in the media and ran up the score when he ran into Kentucky on the field from 1990 to 2001. That disdain never faded. In 2006, Clemson lost to Spurrier's South Carolina team, then fell to Kentucky in the Music City Bowl a month later. The following summer, Spurrier quipped, "We thought we had done something good beating Clemson. And then Kentucky beat 'em." Lederman said.

Even when the Florida Gators weren't great (think more on the four-loss teams of 1992 and 1999), Spurrier's team would still find a way to win. Spurrier ended with a 228-89-2 coaching record and was the SEC Coach of the Year five times. He had nine double-digit win seasons during his stint from 1990-2001 with the Florida Gators and then rode into the sunset with the South Carolina Gamecocks from 2005-2025 before calling it a career.

The Cats are hopefully turning a new page against Florida, and they'll get the chance to avenge those defeats again on November 14, 2026.
