BATON ROUGE – LSU football‘s history with the transfer portal has been very hit-or-miss.

There have been some major wins for the Tigers, i.e. quarterback Jayden Daniels and most recently cornerback Mansoor Delane, but there have been some whiffs as well.

New LSU head coach Lane Kiffin will look to have far more hits than misses as he looks to fill out his first roster in Baton Rouge with a number of players from the transfer portal, which officially opens Jan. 2.

With the portal coming open soon, let’s look back at LSU’s history in the transfer portal and how players have fared.

Best LSU football transfer portal pickups

QB Jayden Daniels: LSU landed Daniels out of the transfer portal before the 2022 season. Daniels played two years at LSU and ended up winning the Heisman Trophy in 2023. Before the Tigers, Daniels played quarterback at Arizona State.

CB Mansoor Delane: Delane transferred to LSU before the 2025 season. In his one season with the Tigers, Delane earned unanimous All-American status at cornerback. Before LSU, Delane played multiple seasons at Virginia Tech.

WR/KR Zavion Thomas: Thomas played at Mississippi Sate before returning to his home state in 2024 and playing for the Tigers. In two seasons, Thomas has piled up 691 receiving yards, six touchdowns and had 209 return yards.

WR Aaron Anderson: LSU landed Anderson out of the transfer portal before the 2023 season. As a sophomore in 2024, Anderson led LSU in receiving yards and touchdowns. For his career in Baton Rouge, Anderson amassed 106 catches for 1,341 yards and five scores. He played at Alabama before LSU.

Most disappointing LSU transfer portal pickups

CB Denver Harris: Harris transferred to LSU from Texas A&M in 2023. His time in Baton Rouge was very troubled and he stayed just one season with the Tigers.

RB Noah Cain: Cain could not find his footing with the Tigers after transferring from Penn State in 2022. In two seasons, he managed 590 rushing yards but did score 13 touchdowns. Cain wasn’t as impactful as many hoped.

CB J.K. Johnson: Johnson transferred to LSU from Ohio State before the 2024 season. But he could not crack the starting lineup as he was brought in to do and he finished his lone season at LSU with three tackles.

When does transfer portal open?

The college football transfer portal opens Jan. 2.

How college football transfer portal works

Players who decide they want to leave their school can enter their name into the transfer portal on Jan. 2. Once they do, other schools can then actively recruit them to play. Players generally announce before the portal opening that they intend to transfer but that doesn’t become official until they are formally in the database.
