OXFORD — Speculation about Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin’s future has thrust Keith Carter into the spotlight.
Carter is the athletic director at Ole Miss. His official title at Ole Miss is the Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics.
Carter will be responsible for Ole Miss’ bid to retain Kiffin for a seventh season at Ole Miss and fend off SEC rivals. Both LSU and Florida have emerged as schools attempting to hire Kiffin.
In December 2019, two weeks after Carter was named the permanent AD at Ole Miss, he hired Kiffin from Florida Atlantic. It has led to a successful partnership.
Carter began working for the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation in 2009 and worked his way up. He succeeded Ross Bjork, who is the current AD at Ohio State.
Carter is a Perryville, Arkansas, native. He lives in Oxford with his wife, Jill, and three children: Drew, Callie and Hayes. Here’s what to know about him.

According to a report from On3, Carter will meet with Kiffin on Nov. 21.
The No. 6 Rebels (10-1, 6-1 SEC) are in great position to make the College Football Playoff for the first time.
In an interview on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Nov. 18, Kiffin denied reports that he was given “an ultimatum” to decide his future by the Nov. 28 Egg Bowl vs Mississippi State.
It makes sense for Carter to want clarity, with the looming presence of signing day, the transfer portal opening and other coaches being hired.
Keith Carter was an Ole Miss basketball star
Carter first came to Ole Miss in 1996 as an athlete.
Carter starred on the basketball court for the Rebels. He was a four-year starter who helped Ole Miss win consecutive SEC West titles in 1997 and 1998.
He earned All-America honors in 1999 and went on to play professionally in Italy.

Kiffin has made morning hot yoga a staple in his life. Carter has been known to join occasionally.
Kiffin said Nov. 19 on an SEC teleconference that he is in daily communication with the AD. Kiffin said they were in the same hot yoga class that morning.
