ESPN’s “College GameDay” is heading back to Lubbock for the first time since 2008, and it’s certain to be a party when the college football pregame show comes to town to preview No. 9 Texas Tech vs. No. 8 BYU.
The Red Raiders (8-1, 5-1 in Big 12 play) face the undefeated Cougars (8-0, 5-0) in a battle between top-10 ranked teams vying for the College Football Playoff on Nov. 8. It’s the first time “College GameDay” will be on site for a Texas Tech game since the magical upside over Texas 17 years ago.
The Red Raiders are looking to avoid falling to two Big 12 losses this season, which would put a damper on their Big 12 championship game hopes.
There are a few names that stick out as potential guest pickers for “College GameDay,” including a certain NFL quarterback who happens to be on bye week.
Here’s a look at a few potential guest picker options for Texas Tech vs. BYU in Week 11:
‘College GameDay’ guest picker predictions for Texas Tech vs BYU
Patrick Mahomes
The most decorated athlete in Texas Tech history already, it feels like a shoo-in for Patrick Mahomes to serve as the guest picker on “College GameDay” in Week 11.
Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP with the Kansas City Chiefs, is on a bye in Week 10 of the NFL season. The 30-year-old quarterback was the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech.
Oh, and Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire told reporters on Sunday, Nov. 2 that Mahomes was already set to attend the game.
Michael Crabtree
Former Texas Tech receiver could be another option, and a fitting one at that. Crabtree caught 10 passes for 127 yards with a touchdown in Texas Tech’s upset win over No. 1 Texas in 2008, which also happened to be the last time “College GameDay” traveled to Lubbock.
The two-time Biletnikoff Award winner is one of the best receivers in college football history and retired from the NFL in 2019.
Wes Welker
Another Super Bowl champion, Wes Welker is a four-time All-Pro and is known for being one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets for years with the New England Patriots.
Welker, who played four seasons at Texas Tech from 2000-03, was an under-the-radar recruit who turned into one of the best players in program history. He went undrafted in 2004 and spent time with the Chargers and Dolphins before emerging as an all-timer with the Patriots.
Welker is currently an assistant with the Washington Commanders, which could impact his availability.
Cleto Cordero
Flatland Cavalry lead singer Cleto Cordero is certainly a longshot, but if “College GameDay” wanted to appeal to the music scene in Lubbock, Cordero could be an option.
Lubbock is, of course, known for its “Red Dirt” music scene, and Flatland Cavalry originated in Lubbock. The group met as students at Texas Tech in 2014. The group has just under 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
