Nash Whelan passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for two scores to lead the Lexington Christian Academy football team to a 33-28 victory over Owensboro Catholic in Friday’s Class 2A state championship game.

A crowd of 7,432 at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field saw Lexington Christian (12-3) win its second state championship and first since 2009.

Owensboro Catholic (13-2) finished as the state runner-up for the third straight year.

Whelan’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Conrad Hart gave Lexington Christian a 33-21 lead with 5:40 remaining.

DreMail Carothers’ 13-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Maddox pulled the Aces within 33-28 with 3:18 left.

After a Lexington Christian punt, Owensboro Catholic got a final possession at its 6-yard line with 49 seconds remaining but failed to complete a pass.

Whelan completed 14 of 20 passes and also carried 21 times for 47 yards. Daven Hood rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Tyler King added six receptions for 91 yards.

Carothers completed 26 of 49 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns but was intercepted twice. Maddox had eight catches for 57 yards and two scores.

KCD football wins first state title 

The Bearcats gave Louisville another championship football program Friday, beating Raceland 20-16 to win their first Class A state title.
