Indiana football brought home the national championship title on Monday, Jan. 19, in a 27-21 victory over Miami.

The victory marks the first championship in program history for the Hoosiers. They are also the first team to win its first national championship title since Florida did so in 1996.

The Hoosiers, ranked No. 1, defeated No. 10 Miami 27-21 in the 2026 College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday, Jan. 19, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Jamari Sharpe intercepted a pass from Miami quarterback Carson Beck with 44 seconds left to clinch the victory for the Hoosiers.

Indiana finishes season 16-0 after national championship win

Indiana completed the season 16-0 after winning the 2026 national championship game against Miami on Jan. 19.

"It took a lot to get here. But I'll tell you what it took to come out ahead in this game: It took a lot of guts," Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said after the game. "We won the national championship at Indiana University. It can be done."

Fernando Mendoza, quarterback for the Hoosiers, finished 16-of-27 passing for 186 yards, adding a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter that ended up being the difference for Indiana.

His mother, Elsa Mendoza, is often shown when he makes a big play. She was the first one he thanked when he accepted his Heisman Trophy in December and was a former tennis star at Miami.

Mark Fletcher Jr. 'tried to sneak' Indiana football player with sucker punch

Indiana football defensive tackle Tyrique Tucker tried to offer congratulations to Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. after the game and Fletcher stunned Tucker with a sucker punch that left the IU defender "stunned."

"I was just trying to congratulate him on the game," Tucker told The Herald-Times. "He tried to sneak me, everybody kind of held me back. That was a cheap punch, luckily we got the win, I'm not really too worried about it. He's salty, he going home with the L."

Bars in Louisville, Southern Indiana area celebrate Hoosiers win

Hoopsters Sports Bar in Jeffersonville, Indiana said in a post to Facebook that they are "speechless" by the amount of Hoosier fans who packed the bar last night.

"To see our place filled with so much excitement, happiness, tears, and pure joy is something I will never forget," the post said. "You all made history right along with the team!"
