LSU head coach Lane Kiffin worked under Nick Saban and even won a championship with the legendary figure before going on to make a name for himself in College Football.
Naturally, Kiffin would approach Saban for any advice as the former Alabama HC is one of the most respected names in all of CFB.
Last year, Kiffin was caught in the middle of a difficult decision and needed advice, and it was obviously his former boss, Saban, whom he approached.
Kiffin was the HC of Ole Miss and had helped them finish the season with an 11-1 record, making them ready for a national championship run. However, that was when LSU came calling, and Kiffin made the decision to leave Ole Miss, a program he had been with for six years, in the middle of a season.
Many fans of the program believed it was Saban’s advice that led Kiffin to Baton Rouge, but the 74-year-old cleared the air around the situation.
Saban denies his role in Kiffin move
Saban was one of the members on the College Gameday crew, and when Pat McAfee introduced him there was a round of boos.
It was then that McAfee posed the question about the advice he offered to Kiffin last year, which led him to open up on the topic.
“I have coaches call me all the time and ask for advice about what they should do and typically what I do is ask that question, ‘Where do you think you could win, where do you think you fit’ and I also said, ‘Why can’t you win at where you are now’ You have a great quarterback, you have a great running back, you’re in the playoffs, you have a chance to win the national championship, so why do you have to go someplace else?
“But everybody makes their own decision. I don’t tell anybody where to go.”
Kiffin is set to face his former team, Ole Miss, as his LSU team look to extend their record to 3-0. However, fans in Oxford have descended in huge numbers, looking to make it difficult for Kiffin and his LSU team to leave Mississippi with a win.
