Over the past few seasons, more college football teams have had players see action on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Heisman Trophy winner, and current Jacksonville Jaguar, Travis Hunter, played both offense and defense during his collegiate career at Colorado. Last season, Utah's Lander Barton played on both offense and defense in multiple games.

The Syracuse Orange are also matching some of these trends. Standout defensive back Demetres Samuel Jr. saw action as a wide receiver in 2025. Samuel was not the only Orange player to complete that feat as junior linebacker Jamie Tremble played both defensive end and tight end.

What is next for Tremble? We caught up with the talented player after practice on Thursday.

The Tremble file

A former four-star high school recruit, Tremble is one of the most highly-touted prospects signed by Fran Brown during his current three-year tenure as head coach.

In his freshman season (2024), the 6-foot-4 Tremble played in all 12 games, at a mix of tight end and special teams.

In 2025, Tremble played again in all 12 games, along with four starts, but played both offense as a tight end, and on defense, registering 18 tackles.

In April, Tremble played on the defensive line and registered a tackle for loss during the team's spring game.

During Tuesday's practice, Tremble was running drills with the linebacker group.

Tremble is listed as a linebacker on the team's roster, marking his third different position in three seasons.

How and where the team uses Tremble will be an interesting storyline heading into the fall.

Tremble on his positional versatility

"They (the coaching staff) are just having me move where ever they want me to. Honestly, versatility, I think, is the best thing and Coach VK's (defensive coordinator Vince Kehres) emphasis has been on the defense and you can play anywhere. So wherever they put me, that's where I'll play."

Tremble on working with linebacker group

"It's been great. I've been learning so much from Coach VK and Coach Bolden (Dan Bolden), they are taking me under their wing. Guys like Chris (D'Appolonia) who have been in the defense for a while, just asking questions, learning a lot from those guys, just defensive concepts in general, it's been great."

What's next for Tremble and the Orange?

Tremble is likely to see more time on defense again this season, but don't discount his ability to contribute on offense in spots.

The next open training camp practice to the media will be Aug. 24. Roundtable will be back at the Ensley Center bringing you coverage on scene.

Game one of the regular season is set for Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for noon ET versus New Hampshire.
