Why LSU football will be CFB's most explosive offense under Lane Kiffin

Lane Kiffin was atop LSU football's coaching wish list for many reasons, but chief among them was Kiffin's offensive prowess. Kiffin has earned a reputation as one of the top offensive minds in the sport, and for good reason. Kiffin called plays for Nick Saban, aiding Alabama on its way to a national title. And in his six years at Ole Miss, the Rebels' offense was among the most prolific in the sport.

Today, we'll look at how explosive Ole Miss was under Kiffin. LSU fans missed explosive plays in 2025. Two years after LSU's offense was the most explosive in the country, the big play had disappeared in Baton Rouge. Kiffin should bring that back this fall.

From 2020-25, Ole Miss gained 20+ yards on 8.81% of snaps. That was the best mark in the country. In that same span, the Rebels ranked No. 3 nationally in 30+ yard plays.

In Kiffin's six years in Oxford, Ole Miss ranked top-10 in 20+ yard pass rate four times, including each of the last three seasons.

The Rebel run game wasn't as explosive, but in 2022, Ole Miss ranked No. 5 in 20+ yard runs. The big runs aren't a signature mark of the Kiffin offense, but they're still there.

LSU's offense needs to be explosive in 2026. There are still some questions about the run game given how poor LSU's offensive line played in 2025, and one way to overcome an inconsistent ground game is to create big plays through the air. Offenses that can score from 40+ yards out don't need the run game to remain on schedule.
